Need new truck advice

I have a 28' TT that weighs a bit over 6000 lbs empty. I tow it now with my 2003 1/2 ton 5.3 liter chevy (3.73 rear) mostly just short distances. On the flats and small hills it tows just fine, the bigger hills I kick down to second gear and slowly make my way up. I am planning a trip from the UP of Michigan to Yellowstone and I know my truck won't make that trip. I am looking at buying a new 2500 crew cab with the 6 liter. Chevy says the truck will tow 9800 lbs with the 3.73 rear or 12,300 with the 4.10 rear. I know here in MI the 3.73 would be fine, but have no Idea how it is to tow in mountains. I am probably going to buy a car when I get this truck for a daily driver depending on how the milage on the new truck is so I will likely only use the truck for hunting and trapping in the fall and towing the camper in the summer. Would it be better to get the 4.10 rear and eat the extra gas cost or is the 3.73 enough to make a trip to the mountains every year or 2 along with my local camping? Also can anyone tell me how well the factory brake controller works or is it better to just buy a good after market one.
Thanks

RE: I got the stink eye today-dont think I deserved it

Some people just need to find something they like to do, Obviously camping for this guy is not it. How much time did you take total? I bet it wasn't more than 10 or 15 minutes. By the mere fact that you were bothered by this tells me that you are aware that you need to empty as quickly as possible and were doing the best you could. If you cant wait a few minutes in line after a relaxing weekend camping you got a problem that runs deeper than waiting for you.

RE: oil changes

If you really want to know for sure, you can go to the amsoil web site (probably otheres too) and get an oil analysis done, I think its about $20. You take a small sample of oil and send it in after your year is up and they will tell you if it's still in good enough condition to protect your engine. The Amsoil I put in my truck is supposed to be good for 25k or 1 year. I'm a skeptic so I cange it twice a year no matter how may miles are on it even though I don't even put 25k a year. High quality synthetic oils Like Amsoil, mobile 1 are a wonderful thing, if I only put 5k on my truck I wouldn't hesidate to change it yearly, as long as I was using a quality air and oil filter and kept all other maintance up.

RE: TV Antenna Cut Rubber Roof

I was out flushing out the anti freeze and checking everything for our first camping trip of the year and noticed that my antenna had started to wear a line where it must have vibrated on the roof. You can barely see it but if you look close its there Only did it on the front blade. there are 4 bolts that touch the roof when the antenna is down but there is no obvious wear from them. Probably just bend the front blade up a bit and it will be fine. I've never even used the thing so the only time Its been up and down is when the dealer show us how to put it up and when I put it up tonight to get a better look.

RE: Engineer's Day:27 June; Soo Locks

If you're coming from VA just for engineers day get set for a disappointment. If you are going to be in the U.P. at that time it is well worth your time, make sure you hit the Edison hydroelectric plant and the LSSU fish lab. Sault Ste. Marie is the oldest city in the Midwest and one of the oldest city's in the US founded in 1668 so if you're a history buff we have lots of it here. If you do decide to come let me know what your plans are or what you are looking to do and I can suggest campgrounds in the area and other attractions. The locks alone are pretty neat, I asked my wife to marry me there.

RE: Monitoring transmission temp

I have the scan gauge and love it, I thought it was kind of pricey when I ordered it but after I got it it was well worth the money. It will display 2 items at the same time, I keep mine on trans temp and mpg. Installs in just a few minutes, order the pillar pod with the gauge makes mounting very easy and looks great too.
Mike
I thought the Scangauge II displayed 4 different items. Do you have a link to the pillar mount?
Made a mistake, thought it was the same gauge I have the AeroForce Intercepter Gauge not the scan gauge. Sorry for the confusion.

putnam hitch intall

I just got done replacing my factory hitch with a Putnam XDR hitch. Getting dark and didn't have the energy to hook the camper up and see how it fits, but it looks to me like the new hitch is a bit higher than the stock hitch. Has anyone replaced theirs and had make any adjustments to the ball height? I should have measured before and after but didn't really think about it until I was done. I also recently put a set of monroe coil overload shocks on so maybe that was what raised the height and I just didn't notice until I was looking closely at the new hitch.
Thanks

RE: Brake Controller choices and where to purchase it

Thanks chadsalt, If I were to put a p3 in would I have to buy a new harness or would I just be able to unplug my cheapie and plug in the new p3? Seems to me it would be $100 well spent after your explination.

RE: Brake Controller choices and where to purchase it

I bought a used pop-up which was my first camper 4 years ago, when I bought it I called the local camper store and said I wanted to bring it in to get AC installed and have them check everything out so I didn't have any problems. They put in the AC unit and told me everything else was good, I asked them about brakes and they said there was no need for brakes on a pop-up as long as I towed it with my 1/2 ton truck. After I towed it a couple times and read a few posts on here I decided that they were wrong and brought it back in to have them wire the 7 pin plug in so I would have brakes. They told me I was wasting my money but were more than happy to do it. I bought a Reese controller from a auto parts store and everthing was fine. Last year I upgraded to a 28' TT and pulled the camper all last year with no problems braking. Now when I say I had no problems barking I always kept a very large distance between me and other cars so I never had to stop quickly. I have noticed that I have to adjust the setting almost every time I pull, but thats not a big problem.
I've never pulled a camper or heavy trailer with any other controller than the Reese so I am not trying to say that there is no difference between the expensive ones and the cheap ones. I guess my question is what does a $100 (or $300 for that matter) brake controller do that my $20 brake controller won't do?
